A USA Today article from late 2008 says it all when it comes to older adults and weight loss:
“Seniors who exercise often don’t need to go to the doctor as much. They can come here and spend time with their peers, and then they feel better able to do things like grocery shop for themselves. They’re also more committed to the program because they realize how precious their quality of life is.”
Of course, weight loss isn’t as easy for seniors as it is for their younger counterparts. And that fact is often coupled with the reality of medical conditions that preclude many land-based forms of exercise and training.
This is one of the reasons the HydroWorx physical therapy pool has been such a boon to people like 85-year-old Margaret, a spunky gal who has lost 35 pounds in the past year thanks to her aquatic exercises at Pieters Family Life Center, Rochester, NY. Despite having had two knee replacements, Margaret is losing weight, feeling great and getting the activity she needs.
